FAQ

Updated: 3 days ago

Jan's School of Dance has established a competitive dance team called "Jan's Dance Company", or "Company" for short.

What is the time commitment to be in Company?

Company members must take at least one Company dance class. Company classes are held once a week for one hour. In addition, Company members are required to take the following classes to improve their skills:

  • Ballet once a week for one hour (one and a half hours for older dancers).

  • Ballet Technique once a week for one hour.

  • Jazz Technique once a week for one hour.

How much travel is involved if you are in Company?

We are looking to offer two options for the 2025-2026 season to accommodate different levels of commitment and travel.

For dancers looking for a more immersive experience, we have a travel team that attends four regional competitions between January and May, typically competing in larger cities such as Indianapolis, St Louis, Nashville, and Louisville.

We are looking into establishing a limited-travel team that gives our dancers the opportunity to compete at local and nearby competitions, allowing for a competitive experience with minimal travel. This is a great option for those who want to balance dance with other activities.

Both options will offer top-notch training, performance opportunities, and a strong sense of teamwork and growth.

Will my child will lose touch with their dance friends if they join Company?

Definitely not! Even if your child takes a Company class, they can still take recreational classes to stay in contact with their existing friends. Many of our Company dancers take Company and recreational classes and enjoy the additional friendships that come with both!

How much does it cost?

Company prices are comparable to recreational prices. Company students also get free technique classes to lock in the fundamentals of dance. If your dancer has a solo, duet, or trio, they will have private lessons in addition to weekly dance classes.

What are the benefits of joining Company?

Besides creating lifelong friendships and memories, competitive dance builds discipline, teamwork, confidence, and physical fitness. It also provides opportunities for artistic expression, performing for large audiences, and personal growth.

I don't know much about competitive dance. Can you explain it to me?

Competitions are divided by age groups (e.g., mini, junior, teen, senior) and skill levels (e.g., recreational, intermediate, advanced). Judges typically use a points system to evaluate performances. Scores are based on factors like technique, choreography, execution, musicality, and showmanship. Competitions provide dancers with constructive feedback from industry professionals, helping them to improve their skills. Awards can include trophies, medals, scholarships, or special titles (e.g., "Overall High Score" or "Best Choreography").
